All About Me

What is Osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a very common joint disorder that affects millions worldwide. It occurs when the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of your bones wears down over time. The resulting inflammation can cause pain, stiffness, and decreased mobility in the affected joints.
How can Low Dose Radiation Therapy help?
Low dose radiation therapy (LDRT) was first described as an effective treatment for osteoarthritis some 125 years ago. Now, based newer clinical studies showing high success rates with minimal side effects, LDRT is experiencing a resurgence.
In LDRT, very low doses of radiation are delivered in precise fashion to the affected joint, typically three times per week for a total of six treatments. These low doses of radiation have been shown to reduce inflammation, stimulate healing, and alleviate the pain and loss of mobility associated with osteoarthritis.
What should I expect during LDRT treatment?
-
Consultation: Your journey begins with a thorough consultation where we assess your condition and discuss treatment options.
-
Treatment planning: A quick CT scan is obtained of the affected area so that the treatment area can be precisely defined; no injections of contrast are needed.
-
Treatment sessions: LDRT treatment sessions are very quick (treatment time is typically 5 minutes) and painless.
-
Monitoring: We monitor your progress closely and adjust treatment as necessary to ensure optimal results.
Is LDRT right for me?
-
You have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis.
-
Conservative treatments, such as medications, physical therapy, or steroid injections, have not provided adequate relief.
-
You are looking for a non-invasive treatment that may alleviate pain, improve function, and delay the need for surgery.
How is LDRT different from the radiation therapy given to treat cancer?
Both the daily dose and the total dose given in LDRT are far lower that what is used in cancer treatment. In LDRT, the very low doses given cause cellular changes leading to decreased inflammation, not cell death.
How effective and safe is LDRT for osteoarthritis?
LDRT for osteoarthritis is very effective. Some patients require a repeat course of LDRT after 12 weeks to produce optimal relief. Together, about 80% of patients enjoy an improvement in pain and mobility, according to published studies.
In Germany, the most common use of radiation therapy is LDRT for osteoarthritis. The risks of treatment, including the risk of cancer, are thought to be minimal.
Can LDRT be used for conditions other than osteoarthritis?
Yes. There is extensive data supporting the use of LDRT in other inflammatory joint conditions not responsive to medical therapy, including plantar fasciitis, Dupuytren’s contracture of the fingers, and bursitis.
Does insurance pay for LDRT for the treatment of osteoarthritis?
Both Medicare and most commercial insurance plans do cover LDRT.
